SOLOMON ISLAND TSUNAMI RELIEF

BASEMENT BLOW-OUT SALE

On April 2, 2007 our friends in the Solomon Islands, but especially those in the diocese of Gizo, were hit by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami.  In addition to the Gizo town proper, many other villages and towns were destroyed as well.  We are very familiar with the people of Gizo because it was where we worked in 2004. Many of those with whom we worked have died.

In addition, what fragile infrastructure existed prior to April 2, has pretty well collapsed.

We are personal friends with the bishop of Gizo, Bernard O’Grady, OP from Australia.  The aftermath – the grief, the daily hardships (lack of water, food and shelter) have been very difficult experiences for him physically and emotionally.  He has stayed with the people, lived in the rubble, buried the dead,  and comforted those with losses we can only begin to imagine.

We at the Thomas More Center have been attempting to alert our USA friends to this disaster with the encouragement to be generous in contributions.

One effort we recently made was to have a blow-out basement sale.  We figured not only could we raise some money, but we would benefit by having a cleaned out basement!  It was a lot of work but we had some fun in the meantime and we brought together neighbors and church members, even lots of people up visiting for the holiday weekend.  All who came were very generous.

It worked!  On Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27, 2007 we raised $885 which we sent over to the Solomons.  The photos tell the rest of the story.
